Syfer SYX/UYX Series: The Next-Generation Safety Capacitor

Syfer SYX/UYX Series: The Next-Generation Safety Capacitor
In other articles on our website we have talked about what safety capacitors are and why they are so important. Now we would like to show you what trends we are seeing in the (automotive) market, why the Syfer SYX / UYX Series is such a unique solution and what special criteria it meets to be rightfully called next-generation safety capacitor.

Originally, safety capacitors are made to protect users and devices while being connected to the grid. For that reason most solutions are rated at 250V AC. However, nowadays we also connect equipment and systems with higher voltages such as car chargers and battery systems to the grid which obliges manufacturers of safety capacitors to step up their game.

To provide you with an example, most vehicle electrical systems were all based on 12 volts and used capacitors rated for 30V or 50V test requirements. Now automotive manufacturers are starting to move designs up to 800V. The testing requirements for 800V systems specify that the ceramic capacitors in the circuits are expected to survive up to 4 kV.

Knowles Precision Devices is specialized in high-voltage capcitors and a market leader in MLCC rated from about 200 V up to 12 kV. Building on their expertise they have developed an Enhanced-Safety range with the SYX / UYX Series. The below overview shows the unique features of this product family;

  • Low-loss
  • High-capacitance
  • Surface-mount
  • Reduces size and height
  • Fully approved by TÜV and UL
  • Humidity robustness grade III
  • Guaranteed 4 mm creepage for IEC 60384-14 qualification
  • 100% tested
Looking at the above specifications we may conclude that Knowles can offer superior performance with the benefits of a SMD package where the competitions only offers leaded parts.

The product specialist team is ready to help you with the selection of the right safety capacitor for your application. Go ahead and ask them for a sample and experience the first-class performance of these MLCC yourself.
